Use search options
Universities make great efforts to provide their students with the best information and research opportunities – they are not always used, and often students are unaware of these options.
Today, university libraries have a comprehensive physical inventory of books, scientific journals and periodicals, as well as the ability to search online in the catalog.
Many works are already digitized – for example in the form of PDF files – and can be downloaded directly from the online catalog.
In addition, universities often have logins in large compound databases. In this way, students have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and obtain literature without detours.
Library usage and research can be learned
For the use of a library, it is usually not enough to type search terms in a catalog. It is not for nothing that many universities offer study induction days, which include a guided library tour: they show the structure, the grouping of the subject matter, the practice of the research and the concrete procedures for book lending.
The same applies to the online research: In order to make the numerous research tools fully usable for a topic or a scientific work, it is necessary to use the offered search tools also meaningful – who searches in library stocks only about simple individual terms, as he does it on Google – gives away a lot of the possibilities, because the search masks offer much more:
Different conceptual logic links, approximate search, search by headline or full text, search by author, limited to a certain period of time, etc.
Only those who know and practice the practice of online and offline research can unfold their full potential, can also find the perfect and sometimes hard-to-find literature and profitably use it for their own reasoning.
